Today I speak with Artemis Scantalides, a personal trainer and gym owner who specializes in hard style kettlebell training, and women’s strength training. She is also the 9th woman and the lightest woman to complete the Iron Maiden Challenge, a Black Belt in Kung Fu, and Certified Kettlebell-Functional Movement Specialist.
Artemis was not always a fitness professional. Although she was a very active young girl who was a ballet dancer, she found herself in the tech industry for several years. After embracing her passion for fitness and teaching people she eventually co-founded Iron Body Studios in the Boston Mass. area.
Artemis explains to us what hard-style kettlebell training is and how its different from other kettlebell methods. She then shares with us how her background in Kung Fu and ballet has helped her focus on technique in her lifting and be more mindful of what she does in the gym. Although several positives came from her ballet background Artemis talks about some of the not so good aspects of dancing. She tells us how it impacted her body image. She also talks about how martial arts help remedy those issues.
At her gym, Artemis primarily uses kettlebells in small groups and team training. They focus on personalized training, using bodyweight and kettlebell movements, while increasing strength. When asked about common trends she sees in people coming to her gym, Artemis says she sees people who are approaching 40 or in their early 40’s and wanting to get back into shape.
We then talk about the importance of getting stronger. Injury prevention, fat loss, improved daily activity are huge benefits of strength training. To help people who are intimidated by weight training, Artemis started a workshop called, “I’m not afraid to lift.”
Here is the article Artemis referenced about the day she stopped running.
